The 11th National Prevention Conference, held on the 7th and 8th of November at the Tullamore Court Hotel, recently brought together a diverse community of public health experts, policymakers, researchers and clinicians to explore the latest developments in disease prevention and health promotion.
This year’s conference kicked off with a special pre-conference symposium which included a live NIPC Series webinar, ‘Spotlight on New Guidelines in Cardiovascular Disease: Top Insights – What You Need to Know!’ An esteemed international panel of speakers presented on the 4 New ESC Guidelines in Elevated Blood Pressure and Hypertension, Atrial Fibrillation, Chronic Coronary Syndromes, Peripheral Arterial and Aortic Diseases. The National Prevention Conference continues to lead conversations about the importance of a prevention-first approach and this year’s theme, “The Intricate Connections Between Cardio-renal and Metabolic Health,” highlighted the need for innovative strategies and multidisciplinary collaboration in tackling emerging health challenges. Addressing important topics from the new ESC guidelines and statin management to lifestyle interventions and Artificial Intelligence in prevention, several key presentations showcased cutting-edge research that emphasised that an integrated approach to prevention and management of interconnected chronic conditions is key to reducing cardiovascular risk factors.
The conference also celebrated significant contributions in the field through its NIPC Fellowship and poster awards. Special recognition was given to Dr Michael Vallis and Professor Fidelma Dunne, who were presented with Honorary Fellowship Awards for 2024, acknowledging their outstanding commitment to the Institute and their significant contributions to the field of preventive medicine and cardiovascular health.
Lucina Dack won the Best Poster Award for her poster ‘What is the Incidence of Newly Diagnosed Heart Failure in Patients Referred to the Integrated Cardiovascular Chronic Disease Management Hub by General Practitioners?’
Syed Mohammad Naqvi received the runner-up award for his poster ‘Impact of Obesity on Echocardiographic Parameters in Individuals free of CVD using Anthropometric Measurements.’ Additionally, Lorna Keating received the People’s Choice Award for her poster ‘An Integrated Approach to Lipid Management Optimisation Algorithm.’

This year’s conference was not only a platform for knowledge-sharing but also a call to action for professionals across all health sectors to champion prevention in their fields. Moving forward, implementing these insights into practical policies and programmes will be key in making lasting impacts in public health.
