An international Study of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease in partnership with the World Heart Federation, European Society of Cardiology, Asia Pacific Society of Cardiology, InterAmerican Society of Cardiology and Pan-African Society of Cardiology.
.
.

The objectives of this international
study of 12,000 coronary patients across 30 countries from 5 WHO regions
outside Europe are to (i) describe prevalence of cardiometabolic and
renal risk factors in coronary patients; (ii) describe
current risk factor management to defined targets by
drug therapies (iii) provide an objective assessment of clinical implementation of
international and national guidelines; (iv) investigate the reasons for variation in
preventive cardiology practice between regions and countries; (v) promote
the principles of best preventive cardiology practice
through continental and national societies of cardiology and heart foundations.

INTERASPIRE includes in depth clinical and laboratory
studies of (i) dysglycaemia and diabetes; (ii) chronic kidney disease; (iii)
atrial fibrillation; (iv) familial hypercholesterolaemia; and (v) heart
failure.

This international study is being conducted through
National Societies of Cardiology which have responsibility for appointing
National Coordinators, selecting geographical regions (minimum of three) and
hospital centres (minimum of 6 in each country) together with Principal
Investigators.

The study population is a
consecutive sample of coronary patients from each hospital which meet the
following diagnostic criteria: Acute
coronary syndromes (acute myocardial infarction with ST elevation (STEMI) and
Non ST elevation MI (Non-STEMI) and stable coronary artery disease). Patients
are interviewed and examined in hospital using standardised methodology,
including one central laboratory in Helsinki, Finland, for measurement of
fasting lipids, glucose, HbA1c, creatinine and urinary albumin, and then
followed up for hospitalisations, non-fatal and fatal cardiovascular events and
all cause mortality.

A pilot study in Argentina (8 regions and 8 hospitals) and Malaysia (5 regions and 6 hospitals)  is on-going and 400 coronary patient interviews from each country will be completed during 2019 -20; a total of 800 coronary patients.
The main study was launched in 2020, starting with Colombia, followed by China, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Philippines, Singapore, Sudan, Tanzania, UAE and USA. With a minimum of 6 hospital centres in each country, we expect 400 coronary patient interviews in 2020-21 (200 in each of the African countries) ; a total of 4000 coronary patients.

The patient data from INTERASPIRE
will be combined with the 8261 coronary patients from 27 countries from the WHO
European region (EUROASPIRE V 2016-18) to give a complete real world picture of
contemporary therapeutic management of cardiometabolic and renal disease and
the impact such care has on event free survival.
